The following  image was made from Add Fractions - Strict:

Add Strict With Circles

Addition with Fractions With Circles - Strict is similar to the previous program ADD UNLIKE FRACTIONS except that the addends may be mixed numbers and the sum must be written as a mixed number and in lowest terms.

See the program MIXED NUMBERS for information on writing fractions in mixed form.

See the program RENAME TO LOWEST TERMS for information on writing fractions in lowest terms.

Written out, the example would look like this:

Add Strict With Circles2

In this example, the whole numbers are added for 2 in the sum. The fractions 5/6 and 3/4 are written over a common denominator 12 and the numerators are added for 19/12 in the sum. The fraction 2 19/12 is renamed to simplest form 3 7/12.

You may prefer to work vertically:

You may prefer to write each addend in fraction form first:

Add Strict With Circles3

In many examples, the sum may be found by visually combining the two addends.

In the above example, the sum (3 7/12) must be entered as a mixed number and in lowest terms.
